Tutorials::Blending

Intro

This tutorial covers how to blend using the eraser tool and the gradient tool. This is what you will be making.

Step 1

Let's say we want to blend these two pictures together.

Open these images in photoshop.

Step 2

Now create a new canvas that is the size of the graphic you want to make. I am going to make mine 500x250 pixels.

Step 3

Select the other picture (whichever one) and Ctrl+A (select>all), Ctrl+C (edit>copy), and then click on the blank canvas. Then hit Ctrl+V (edit>paste). The picture you just selected should now be on the canvas. Position the picture wherever on the canvas you want it.

Step 4

Select the other picture and Ctrl+A (select all), Ctrl+C (copy), and then Ctrl+V (paste) onto the canvas.

Step 5

You can do this step two ways, though one is easier than the other. One way is by using the eraser tool (the easier method), and the other is by using the gradient tool. I will cover the eraser tool method first.

Using the Eraser Tool
Select the top layer (in my case, it would be the picture with KK in front of a bridge/lake). Click on the eraser tool on your toolbar and you will see a brush menu in the top left corner.

Click on the drop down arrow next to the brush to view the brush menu. Now look for the softest round brush there is.

Now, using this soft brush, erase the part of the top layer that you have selected that is on top of the other picture. Like this:

You can also learn to blend the gradient tool way.

Using the Gradient Tool
I did not find this method out myself, so you can read another tutorial for this method here.

After you blend, you can add text, brushes, textures, etc. This is what I came up with. Anyway, I hope this tutorial helps! :)
